In collaboration with Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Architectural Alliance completed the design of the new 250,000 sf theater located in the Historic Mills District on the banks of the Mississippi River.

The project includes 3 theaters, offices, production and rehearsal support spaces, educational classrooms and a restaurant. The new building gives the Guthrie an expanded ability to perform a wider range of plays. The 1,100-seat thrust theater is similar to the signature space in the original theater with upgrades including more leg room. Also included are a 700-seat proscenium theater and an experimental theater with 250 seats.

The design of the Guthrie was influenced by the size, scale and irregular massing of the historic mill district adjacent to the river site. Views of St. Anthony Falls, the Stone Arch Bridge and Mills Ruins Park add to the drama of this new civic icon. The Guthrie Theater’s Grand Opening was June of 2006.
